There are not many canyons in NSW where you hike up the mountain and finish hiking downhill back to the cars, but Coinslot Canyon is one of the very few!
Ethan, David, Laura and I all camped at Coorongooba Campground the night before, and met Jess in the morning. Coorongooba is a spectacular campground! We woke in the morning with views looking up into the canyon we were about to explore, and the cliffs we were about to climb!
Even without the added incentive of the canyon, Coorongooba is well worth a camping visit. One of the most scenic and peaceful campgrounds in NSW.
We crossed over the Capertee River and started making our way to the base of the cliffs. With a little route finding we found the start of the hike up and quickly gained elevation!
There were some very exposed sections of the climb! With some fixed ropes set up in a few places which was a big help.

The first abseil is very dry and open, and drops you down into the gully below.
The next abseil is the love heart rock! One of the best natural love hearts I’ve seen in nature. We opted to set up a fixed guided line like to stay dry and avoid the pool of water below. This is the only real wet section of the whole canyon.

The 3rd abseil drops you into a deep dark cavern section, which is the start of the best section of this canyon.
At the top of the 4th abseil you get this incredible view looking back down towards the campground!
This is the start of the main abseil, and what gives the canyon its name. The abseil narrowly drops between two high and wide rock walls, resembling a ‘coin slot’.
It is a good 35m drop through the coin slot!
It would be incredible to see this canyon with water flow, as water is what has carved these impressive passageways. You can see the damp line of the water flow in the above photos.
The final abseil! As the canyon spits you back out into the open. We love a canyon with lots of big drops. And a downhill walk back to the campground.
