Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon

Funnily enough… I had only completed Grand Canyon twice in the two years I had been canyoning, both which happened to be during the night-time to see the glow worms. My first trip through Grand Canyon at night was my second ever trip through a canyon back in March 2021.

I had seen glow worms a few times before, particularly in caves in New Zealand, but nothing will ever beat lying on your back next to a waterfall, watching trillions of glow worms shine in the cracks of the earth above you, with the starry night sky further above the cracks, and every little glow of light reflected by the water surface of the canyon. It was an experience I don’t think I will ever forget. It almost didn’t feel real.

Fast forward to May 2021, after a trip through Jugglers Canyon I had my second night-time trip through Grand Canyon. This time we barely saw a single glow worm. It was also 6 degrees, so we moved fast!

It was now May 2023, 2 years since the last night-time trip, and I realised I had still not seen Grand Canyon during the day time. A quick message to Ethan to see what he was up to for the weekend, and on the road we went!

There is only one abseil in Grand Canyon which is the entry into the Canyon itself, a fun overhanging abseil which makes you feel like you are dropping into a big black hole in the ground.

Realistically, Grand Canyon is a bit of a canyon within a canyon. The well known and popular tourist track, which I had done many times before, follows the upper main chamber of the canyon. The Grand Canyon for canyoners, lies even deeper within.

It is known for being one of Blue Mountains most picturesque canyons, and with fern walls like this, you can see why!

As has become tradition, we end every canyon with an epic feed. This time it was the incredible pizzas from Station Bar. Some of the best pizzas I have ever had.

I’m Rach!

Welcome to Rachmartee, my personal collection of adventures through-out Australia over the years. Here, I invite you to join me, my friends or my pups on a journey of mishaps, bush bashes, lesser known trails, heartfelt stories and epic scenery!

I have lived and grown up within the ACT and rural NSW my whole life. Getting outside fills my heart with joy and wonder, it calms my nerves, helps me feel grounded and helps me feel connected to this world. I hope these stories and adventures will be an archive collection I can reflect back on for many years, for my family to see what I am getting up to on all these crazy trips and for my children to one day see the crazy and wild things that shaped who their mother is.

Let’s connect
